This book, by the
celebrated animal painter, is the result of many years' observation of the
living animal, backed by detailed study of its muscular mechanism. It is
particularly recommended for artists specializing in horse illustration. There
are, however, many lovers of the horse who, while not wishing to go too deeply
into the anatomical complexities of the subject, would like to have a better
understanding of the scientific basis of the movement of the horse which
combines to produce the swiftness, grace and poetry of motion which this animal
exemplifies. The Horse, with its clear illustrations, and text which avoids
unnecessary technicalities, provides the kind of introduction to the subject
which any horse-lover will enjoy. As L. D. Luard
wrote in a letter, 'People in an age so interested in mechanics would find
animal mechanics absorbingly interested, if they could study it -- so wonderful
is its adjustment of means to ends, its intricacy and economy of weight and
material, that by comparison man-made machines are clumsy and gross.' The
anatomical plate in colour
and the diagrams are supplemented by the author's masterly and acutely observed
animal sketches, and the whole book will be a joy to all who delight in movement
and wish to understand it.
