José De Alencar - Iracema (Inglês)

Jose de Alencar's prose-poem Iracema, first published in 1865, is a classic of Brazilian literature--perhaps the most widely-known piece of fiction within Brazil, and the most widely-read of Alencar;s many works. Set in the sixteenth century, it is an extremely romantic portrayal of a doomed live between a Portuguese soldier and an Indian maiden. Iracema reflects the gingerly way that mid-nineteenth cenury Brazil dealt with race mixture and multicultural experience. Precisely because of its nineteenth-century romanticism, Iracema strongly contributed to a Brazilian sense of nationhood--contemporary Brazilian writers and literary critics still cite it as a foundation for their own work.

Mariana Mazzucato & Caetano Penna - The Brazilian Innovation System: A Mission-Oriented Policy Proposal (Inglês)

Countries around the world are seeking to achieve economic growth that is smart (innovation-led), inclusive, and sustainable. Such a goal requires a rethinking of the role of government and public policy in the economy. In particular, it requires a new justification of government intervention that goes beyond the usual one of simply fixing market failures. In this context, innovation policy is about identifying and articulating new missions that can galvanize production, distribution, and consumption patterns across sectors. Mission-oriented policies can be defined as systemic public policies that draw on frontier knowledge to attain specific goals or ‘big science deployed to meet big problems’.Tackling innovation missions – whether traveling to the moon or battling climate change – requires investments by both private and public actors. The role of the public sector will be particularly important in the early, capital-intensive high-risk areas that the private sector tends to shy away from. But more generally, there is a catalytic role for Government in creating and shaping markets through dynamic public private partnerships.

Tony Cartalucci & Nile Bowie - Subverting Syria: How CIA Contra Gangs And NGO's Manufacture, Mislabel And Market Mass Murder (Inglês)

The Syrian "uprising" is a cynical US-engineered plot using provocateurs, mercenaries, Wahhabi fanatics, corrupt NGO's and the global media. The US, NATO and the feudal emirates are out to smash this independent Arab state that spends on human welfare and refuses to surrender to Israel. The US and Saudi-financed plot turns on the tactic of "Countergangs." Terrorists - mercenaries and irregulars, the "CIA foreign legion" - shoot both demonstrators and police, blow up buildings, massacre innocent villagers - and then blame the carnage on the targeted government. NGO's like NED, the "National Endowment for Democracy" (funded by US State Dept, Geo. Soros, Ford Foundation etc) promote "activists," whose leaders are ambitious sociopaths, eagerly carving out a piece of the carcass for the moment the state is brought down. The corporate lapdog media, cogs in the military-industrial complex, lap up and magnify the Big Lie, creating a fake "reality" that the average person has little chance of seeing through. Subverting Syria reveals how the crusade to destroy Syria follows tactics explicitly set out in the Pentagon's Unconventional Warfare Manual. - fund NGO's to create a climate of protest in the target country - provocateurs organize demonstrations, then fire on protesters and security forces alike to stoke violence - staged and mislabeled video footage creates the illusion of repression - mass media endlessly repeat the Big Lie that the nation's leader is a brutal dictator killing his own people. "Give a dog a bad name and hang him." - invade border towns with special forces death squads, the CIA Foreign Legion of Al Qaeda psychopaths, fanatics and guns for hire - fabricate pretexts for military intervention by the UN, or NATO - bomb the country into the stone age, to be conquered by NATO's Islamic terrorist puppets - eradicate Arab socialism and government for the people, replacing it with a corrupt clique beholden to Wall Street and London bankers - isolate Lebanon, Palestine, Iraq and Iran, giving free rein for Greater Israel to dominate the Middle East - US corporations write multi-billion-dollar contracts for "reconstruction" and "security" Subverting Syria shows how wars are engineered by manipulation of the kinder instincts of mankind, hoodwinking and harnessing pacifist and leftist forces - entrapping them in the service of mass murder and the global dictatorship of the money power.

José Vicente De Sá Pimentel (Edit.) - Brazilian Diplomatic Thought Policymakers And Agents Of Foreign Policy Vol. I (1750-1964)

Brazilian Diplomatic Thought – Policymakers and Agents of Foreign Policy (1750-1964) constitutes the outcome of Funag’s pioneering project of promoting public debate in the area. This three-volume publication identifies and analyzes the underlying concepts of Brazilian diplomacy since its inception – even before the independence of the country in 1822 – up to the year 1964. The work highlights the contributions of remarkable personalities who distinguished themselves in this conceptual elaboration. It also discusses the contexts in which core values and interests guided Brazil’s diplomatic actions during the period in question and beyond. Until recently, the available bibliography on this subject was limited. It even lacked an answer to the fundamental question: “Is there a Brazilian diplomatic thought?” And then, if one answers that question positively, “What are the foundations upon which Brazilian diplomatic thought was built, and what are its main features?” Additionally, one can ask: “What was the genesis of this thought, and where can one find the sources to document its evolution?” Then finally, “Who were the outstanding figures responsible for its formulation and implementation?”

Jono Bacon - The Art Of Community (Inglês)

From ants to anteaters, bees to beekeepers, community is a fundamental part of our life on the planet. We thrive when we are immersed in it, suffer when deprived of it, and wherever humans go we create it. We define ourselves by our communities: tribe, family, work, clubs, schools, churches and temples, these are who we are. We are born into community, and if we’re lucky we’ll end our days surrounded by it. It’s no surprise that as soon as humans began to go online, communities formed, but as easy and natural as group formation is for us in real life, we can find it frustrating online. Many of the cues that grease the wheels of human interaction in person are missing online. Gone is the grin that can soften a criticism, the pat on the back that can heal a rift. How can you “hug it out” when your antagonist is a continent away and you know no more about him than his handle and a few lines of signature? Online groups can breed the most vicious of rivalries. Communities are tough enough to maintain when you’re all in the same room; how much harder is it to build, maintain, and nurture a community online? That’s why this book is such a boon to those who run communities and the rest of us who participate in them. Jono Bacon has firsthand experience with managing a group of the most bloody-minded and independent people on the planet: open source programmers. The information in this book has been forged in the white-hot crucible of free software. You don’t get tougher than that.

Douglas Davies - A Brief History Of Death (Inglês)

This book brings into brief compass a subject that touches practically every aspect of life. The inevitable interest we all have in death – whether voiced or silent – is, often, unlike the interest we possess in other subjects. This one is infused with emotion, whether that of the experience of bereavement or of its anticipation, or of the thought of our own mortality. This brief volume seeks to capture some of these moods as reflected within the kaleidoscope of the history, religion and culture of many societies. I have taken as a guide for inclusion the interest shown by generations of students and others in particular aspects of death covered in courses I have taught, especially at Nottingham and Durham Universities. My own background in both social anthropology, involving empirical studies, and theology, with its reflective concerns, will also be evident throughout the text.

W. J. McG. Tegart, G. W. Sheldon & D. C. Griffiths (Edits.) - Climate Change 1990: Impacts Assessment Of Climate Change (Inglês)

This is the final Report of Working Group II of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which is sponsored jointly by the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environment Programme. The report considers the potential impacts of climate change. Several hundred working scientists from many countries have participated in the preparation and review of the scientific data. The result is a unique statement on impacts of climate change with a breadth not previously achieved by the international scientific community. The impact assessments cover: agriculture and forestry, natural terrestrial ecosystems, hydrology and water resources, human settlement and socioeconomic activities, oceans and coastal zones and the cryosphere. The information presented here is the best available at present. It will inform the necessary scientific, political and economic debates and negotiations that can be expected in the immediate future. Appropriate strategies in response to the issue of climate change can be based on the scientific foundation that the Report provides. The Report is, therefore, an essential reference for all who are concerned with climate change and its consequences.

ONU - How AIDS Changed Every Thing (MDG 6: 15 Lessons Of Hope From The AIDS Response)

We have reached a defining moment in the AIDS response. Against all odds, we have achieved the AIDS targets of Millennium Development Goal 6. AIDS changed everything. The epidemic frightened us to the core, brought death to our door and opened our eyes to the injustice of stigma and discrimination faced by the most vulnerable people among us. In 2000, with a crisis before us, the world responded at a magnitude not seen before. Together, we have faced down some of the most difficult issues in society and persevered on the side of equity and justice. We have ensured that advancements in science are reaching everyone, everywhere. And always, we are asking ourselves—“what is next?” Next, my friends, we must finish what we started. As part of the sustainable development goals we must set our sights on ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030. We have seen that the AIDS response is a powerful pathfinder. As we strive to end this epidemic as a public health threat, we are also on a path towards better health, education and employment for families and communities. It is inspiring how partners in the AIDS response have time and again reached for what is best rather than what is good enough. From equal access to services and quality medicines to the protection of rights and promotion of respect and dignity—we have followed the evidence and we have followed our hearts.

Robert Klanten - Dos Logos (Inglês)

Almost three years after putting our worldwide bestseller Los Logos together, dgv announces its much-anticipated follow-up. Dos Logos presents extensive examples of contemporary logo design in even greater depth and charts new developments in the field. Done in the same format as the first volume, Dos Logos explores the exceptional visual language and stylistic approaches to logo creation by designers from around the globe. It is thoroughly indexed, catalogued by subject and systematically structured according to various search criteria. In order to offer even more value to conscientious designers in terms of practicality, it also classifies the included work according to the industry or purpose for which it was designed (music, fashion, corporate, etc.). In addition, the book contains more unusual applications and a broader range of logos including those used on building facades, on clothing and as illuminated advertising. Its scope and usefulness make Dos Logos the ultimate update on the current state of logo design.

Lowes D. Luard - The Anatomy And Action Of The Horse (Inglês)

This book, by the celebrated animal painter, is the result of many years' observation of the living animal, backed by detailed study of its muscular mechanism. It is particularly recommended for artists specializing in horse illustration. There are, however, many lovers of the horse who, while not wishing to go too deeply into the anatomical complexities of the subject, would like to have a better understanding of the scientific basis of the movement of the horse which combines to produce the swiftness, grace and poetry of motion which this animal exemplifies. The Horse, with its clear illustrations, and text which avoids unnecessary technicalities, provides the kind of introduction to the subject which any horse-lover will enjoy. As L. D. Luard wrote in a letter, 'People in an age so interested in mechanics would find animal mechanics absorbingly interested, if they could study it -- so wonderful is its adjustment of means to ends, its intricacy and economy of weight and material, that by comparison man-made machines are clumsy and gross.' The anatomical plate in colour and the diagrams are supplemented by the author's masterly and acutely observed animal sketches, and the whole book will be a joy to all who delight in movement and wish to understand it.

Alexis De Tocqueville - Essays On Philosophical Subjects (Inglês)

This is Volume III of the new edition of the Works and Correspondence of Adam Smith undertaken by the University of Glasgow. It contains the Essays on Philosophical Subjects and Dugald Stewart’s ‘Account of the Life and Writings of Adam Smith’, together with Smith’s contributions to the Edinburgh Review and his Preface to William Hamilton’s Poems on Several Occasions. The range of subjects covered in this collection is too wide to be edited by any one scholar. The main task of dealing with the essays that are strictly on ‘philosophical subjects’ was entrusted to W. P. D. Wightman. The editors for the remaining pieces were chosen with an eye to their role in the preparation of other, related, volumes. John Bryce, the editor of the Lectures on Rhetoric, has therefore dealt with the essay on ‘English and Italian Verses’, the articles in the Edinburgh Review, and the Preface to Hamilton’s Poems, while Ian Ross, Smith’s biographer and (with E. C. Mossner) editor of the Correspondence, has looked after Stewart’s ‘Account’. It was also thought desirable to appoint general editors in order to ensure uniformity of practice and to relate the different parts of this volume to each other and to the edition as a whole. We have tried to do so by providing a General Introduction and a number of supplementary notes (enclosed within square brackets). For much of the information in these notes we are indebted to several scholars, including P. Michael Brown, John Bryce, Eric Forbes, A. Rupert Hall, and Donald Malcolm. We owe a special debt to the late Donald Allan, formerly Professor of Greek in the University of Glasgow, for his extensive and invaluable help in dealing with classical sources; many of the supplementary notes concerned with the ancient world have been supplied by him in their entirety.

Malcolm Bull - Inventing Falsehood, Making Truth: Vico And Neapolitan Painting (Inglês)

Can painting transform philosophy? In Inventing Falsehood, Making Truth, Malcolm Bull looks at Neapolitan art around 1700 through the eyes of the philosopher Giambattista Vico. Surrounded by extravagant examples of late Baroque painting by artists like Luca Giordano and Francesco Solimena, Vico concluded that human truth was a product of the imagination. Truth was not something that could be observed: instead, it was something made in the way that paintings were made--through the exercise of fantasy. Juxtaposing paintings and texts, Bull presents the masterpieces of late Baroque painting in early eighteenth-century Naples from an entirely new perspective. Revealing the close connections between the arguments of the philosophers and the arguments of the painters, he shows how Vico drew on both in his influential philosophy of history, The New Science. Bull suggests that painting can serve not just as an illustration for philosophical arguments, but also as the model for them--that painting itself has sometimes been a form of epistemological experiment, and that, perhaps surprisingly, the Neapolitan Baroque may have been one of the routes through which modern consciousness was formed.

Oscar Fernandez - Aphoristic Compendium: A Tribute To Juan Magariños (Inglês)

The philosophical biology is a study field that has a transdiciplinary tendency from which is  possible to observe the emergence of new paradigms in biology, according to the worldviews of Fritjof Capra. Those paradigms have an influence on the cultural reality of humanity. From this perspective, the relationships between science & art, biopolitics & society, bioethics & education, science, ethics & society, among others, bring us closer to the complementarity view to a perspective that seeks to harmonize ideas and feelings once antagonistic (Cartesian-Newtonian Paradigm), in order to prove a complex and also dynamic configuration which permanently auto-generates and auto-organizes itself.

Rosa Marina Brito Jr. (Org.) - Internationalization And Academic Quality Enhancement: 20th Anniversary Of PUC-Rio's International Office (Inglês)

A true university should be able to significantly strengthen its institutional and local  identity  by  dialoguing  and  exchanging  with  international  institutions. This  dialectic  relation  between  local  and  global  realities  characterizes  the core of universities that integrate teaching to research and extension studies. Universities should be immersed in the problems and challenges that are part of their local and regional territories, by trying to understand them, thinking them  over  and  responding  to  society’s  cultural  issues  and  technological demands  with  the  construction  of  knowledge,  innovative  solutions,  ethical values and many other aspects related to the integrated education of human beings. However, universities should not limit themselves to local challenges, repressing  and  suffocating  their  vocation  to  universality,  rather,  they  should pursue it through permanent bonds with institutions from other continents and  distinct  territories.  Supportive  solidarity,  committed  to  local  challenges and  to  the  communion  and  exchange  of  international  experiences,  is  what nourishes  and  renews  academic  life.  Through  the  existence  of  numerous university nets, today’s world shows us the need to open up to interrelations in  order  to  exchange  information,  to  educate  and  innovate,  overcoming intramural paradigms and the fiefs of knowledge enclosed in the departments, institutes and research labs.

Arthur Ituassu - Brazil @openDemocracy (2005-15): Fragments Of Brazil's Recent Political History (Inglês)

A lot can change in ten years: or, at least, a lot can happen in ten years. And no doubt about it, the 10 years from 2005 to 2015 were politically intense in Brazil. What the reader has in his/her hands here is a series of articles about Brazilian politics written for the London-based website openDemocracy (www.opendemocracy.net) between the years 2005 and 2015. As the subtitle of this book says, these are fragments of Brazilian recent political history, and, more importantly, fragments of Brazil’s restored democratic path, recommenced in the middle of the 1980s after two decades of a military regime. In this context, this volume will provide a commentary on the complex dynamics of Brazilian democracy, and more that it will strengthen the conviction that, despite some setbacks, democracy is an inevitable prerequisite for Brazilians if they are to deal with their country’s historical injustices.
